
German Wines Receive Strong Endorsement from Nigerian Hospitality Stakeholders
Stakeholders across Nigeria’s wine, hospitality, tourism, and beverage industries gathered at the prestigious Civic Centre, Lagos on Monday 1st June, 2026 for the German Business Delegation to West Africa /Wine Tasting Event, an initiative aimed at strengthening trade relations and introducing premium German wines to the Nigerian market.

Covered by the UNCORK-NG Podcast, a fast growing and leading media platform focused on the hospitality, wine, and beverage sectors, the event attracted industry professionals, importers, distributors, hospitality executives, wine enthusiasts, and members of the diplomatic community for a day of wine discovery, business networking, and market engagement.
The event which was identified as the first of its kind in the history of the German wine exploration to West-Africa and to Nigeria, brought together a distinguished gathering of wine professionals and distributors to explore opportunities for trade, cultural exchange, and collaboration between Germany and Nigeria through the lens of wine and hospitality.
Organized as part of Germany’s strategic engagement with the West African market, the event featured a comprehensive program including an Information Session, Professional Wine Tastings, Networking Opportunities, and Business Engagement Sessions designed to foster stronger commercial and cultural relationships between both nations.
To further grace the event was the distiguished presence of the German Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Annett Günther, alongside the German business delegation lead, Anton Bondarew, the representative of Federal Ministry of Agriculture, food and regional identity, Dr. Lisa Jaeckering, and a distinguished team of German winemakers who travelled to Nigeria to showcase premium wines from various renowned wine-producing regions across Germany.

While interacting directly with the German producers and export representatives, they affirmed that the tasting sessions generated significant interest among participants, many of whom expressed surprise and admiration at the quality, character, and diversity of the wines presented.

Speaking during the event, the German Ambassador reaffirmed Germany’s confidence in the Nigerian market and emphasized the broader vision behind introducing German wines to Nigerian consumers.
According to the Ambassador, beyond commercial objectives, the initiative seeks to inspire greater interest in Germany as a wine tourism destination, encouraging Nigerians to explore Germany’s rich wine culture and heritage while further strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
“Wine is not only a product; it is also a cultural experience and an invitation to discover the people, places, and traditions behind it and because the German wines are a strong part of our culture, we are delighted to further strengthen the already existing mutual relationship we share with Nigeria by way of extending this novel culture,” she noted while expressing optimism about the future of German wine in Nigeria. Representatives of the German delegation and participating wineries also praised the reception they received in Lagos, describing Nigerian consumers as knowledgeable, welcoming, and highly engaged throughout the tasting experience.

One distinguished Nigerian wine guru and active participant of the event, Mr. Tokunbo Ekundayo, reflecting on the tasting experience, predicted a positive future for German wines in both Nigeria and the wider African market, citing growing consumer curiosity, evolving wine preferences, and increasing demand for premium and differentiated wine offerings.
In a final statement by one of the organizers, he noted that the event represents another significant step in expanding wine education, strengthening international partnerships, and increasing consumer awareness of emerging wine regions.
