VICTOR IKEM JOINS EXCLUSIVE GERMAN WINE TASTING IN LAGOS, HAILS RIESLING’S POTENTIAL FOR NIGERIAN CUISINE

…LWS Wine Academy Founder Sees Growing Opportunities for German Wines in Nigeria
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Founder of LWS Wine Academy and Chief Executive Officer of Drinks Revolution Limited, Dr. Victor Ikem, has joined a select delegation of wine and business professionals for an exclusive German wine tasting hosted by the German diplomatic mission in Lagos.
The event was hosted by Germany’s new Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Stefan Rößel, alongside the Consul General of Germany in Lagos, Daniel Krull, bringing together invited guests for an exploration of German wines and their potential within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving wine and hospitality market.
Guests participated in a curated tasting flight featuring selected wines from three German wineries and several grape varieties and wine styles, including Riesling, Pinot varieties and Chardonnay, among others.
The tasting provided an opportunity to experience the diversity of German winemaking and to discuss the possibilities for expanding the presence and appreciation of German wines in Nigeria.
Speaking following the tasting, Ikem described the selected wines as particularly interesting for the Nigerian market, noting that their diversity, freshness and food-pairing qualities could appeal to an increasingly sophisticated Nigerian wine consumer.
He singled out German Riesling for its potential compatibility with Nigerian cuisine.
«“Riesling is particularly interesting for the Nigerian palate. Nigerian cuisine is rich, spicy and highly expressive, so you need a wine with freshness, good acidity and aromatic character that can complement those flavours without being overwhelmed by them. Riesling offers that versatility.”»
According to Ikem, the natural characteristics of Riesling could make it an attractive choice for pairing with several Nigerian dishes, particularly spicy and richly seasoned foods.
He said the tasting also demonstrated the need for greater consumer education around German wines in Nigeria, noting that many Nigerian wine consumers are familiar with wines from some of the world’s major wine-producing countries but have had comparatively limited exposure to the diversity Germany offers.
“There is an opportunity to introduce Nigerian consumers to a broader German wine experience. It is not simply about bringing wine into the market. We have to create the education, tasting experiences, food pairings and hospitality partnerships that help consumers understand what they are drinking and where it fits into their lifestyle.”
Ikem noted that Nigeria’s expanding hospitality industry, growing middle-class consumer market and increasing interest in wine education provide opportunities for international wine producers seeking to develop a stronger presence in West Africa.
He advocated stronger partnerships among German wineries, Nigerian importers and distributors, restaurants, hotels, sommeliers, wine educators and hospitality professionals.
Through LWS Wine Academy, Ikem has been promoting structured wine education and professional development within Nigeria’s wine and hospitality ecosystem. Drinks Revolution Limited, which he also founded, is involved in the importation, distribution and marketing of wines and spirits in Nigeria.
He said international tastings such as the German wine event provide an important bridge between wine-producing countries and emerging consumer markets.
“Wine is also a vehicle for cultural exchange. When we taste wines from Germany, we are experiencing the geography, history, agriculture and craftsmanship behind those wines. The next stage is finding how those traditions can connect with our own food culture and hospitality industry in Nigeria.”
Ikem expressed optimism that German wines could secure a stronger position in the Nigerian market through sustained trade engagement, consumer education and strategic distribution.
He added that LWS Wine Academy would continue to promote wine knowledge and expose students, hospitality professionals, entrepreneurs and consumers to wines from different regions of the world.
The German wine tasting also provided a platform for interaction between members of the diplomatic community and stakeholders within Nigeria’s wine, business and hospitality sectors, further strengthening opportunities for cultural and commercial exchange between Nigeria and Germany.
